Seasonal Allergy Symptoms in Dogs

Seasonal Allergy Symptoms in Dogs

Allergies can be a real pain for us humans, but the same can be said for dogs! Allergies in dogs are quite common, and allergies can affect dogs of all breeds and typically appear after a dog is six months old. If your dog is displaying unusual behavior, such as gnawing at its paws endlessly or is sneezing incessantly, then it may have a case of allergies!

Common Allergens and Allergy Symptoms

For humans, seasonal allergies occur when you inhale an allergen, whereas dogs absorb allergens through their skin and/or paws. Seasonal allergies usually occur during specific times of the year, but it largely depends on where you live. For most areas, though, your dog’s allergies will peak during the Spring when common allergens are everywhere.

Common allergens for seasonal allergies include:

Weeds

Fungi

Mold

Dust

Grass

Pollen

Mites

Your dog may demonstrate some of the following symptoms:

Biting Nails

Scooting

Secondary Skin Infections

Lesions On Paws

Inflamed Skin

Scratching

Respiratory Issues

Recurring Ear Infections

Shedding

Licking Hindquarters

Seasonal Allergy Tips

Minimize exposure to seasonal allergens by wiping your dog’s paws, legs, and underside with baby wipes. Additionally, give your pooch a bath every week with oatmeal shampoo and lukewarm water to soothe any irritated skin.

Don’t forget, your veterinarian is your best friend’s best friend when it comes to diagnosing and treating your pup’s seasonal allergies, so make sure you are up-to-date on your pup’s visits!
